"I hear music on the harp as upbeat and exciting"

Greg is a world-class harpist whose aggressive style of playing usually redefines the listener's concept of performance on the harp. His superb musicianship combined with an enthusiastic attitude toward the Christian life make him one of the most sought-after Christian performers in America. Greg readily gives God credit for everything he has today and for bringing him from the depths of worldly living to the triumphant life he now lives. At age 9, Greg began playing the harp. Naturally gifted, he excelled and progressed quickly. As a young man, he spent four years in the United States Naval Bank stationed in Washington, D.C. Following the military, Greg entered the southern California music scene where he experienced the glamour of professional success. His personal life, however was a dark paradox. The introduction to alcohol at age 13 thrust Greg's life into the downward spiral of alcoholism, drug abuse, dabbling in the occult and brief experiences with the law. In the fall of 1981, Greg left the music scene and entered college, determined to reconstruct the fibers of his life that had so quickly unraveled. During this time, a friend invited Greg to a Christian concert. Jesus Christ entered Greg's heart that night and the Holy Spirit began the process of repairing and healing the broken man who was so desperately searching for a new beginning. Over the next several years, Greg would embark on a journey that he could not travel alone. God used an encouraging married couple to help Greg through the process of becoming a mature believer. Greg's words describe their ministry to him best when he says, "They invited me to dinner and I stayed for 2 1/2 years". It was at a retreat with this couple that Greg accepted the call into the harp ministry. After the years of molding and refining, God was ready to use Greg Buchanan in a mighty way. Part of God's provision, in Greg's life, was blessing him with a wonderful family who support him from their home in California. Greg's wife, Becky, is a kindred spirit when it comes to understanding dramatic life changes. She was also rescued from a destructive lifestyle and spent much time allowing God to carry the baggage she had accumulated. Becky keeps life going smoothly at home while Greg is traveling. As smooth as life can be with three children. Matthew, age 12; Erik, age 10 and beautiful Bree at 6 years keep their mother busy. Occasionally Becky and the children "brave the road" and travel with Greg. Both Becky and Greg are natives of California and enjoy living in southern California close to family and dear friends.
Greg enjoys the very great privilege of being the first harpist in the world to own and play the electronic grand harp developed and hand-crafted by Lyon and Healy of Chicago. This newly introduced instrument has technical capabilities that take Greg's music into realms of expression heretofore unattainable. The instrument is a Salzedo Art Deco design that was personalized according to Greg's specific needs. During concert performances Greg also performs on a Celtic (Irish folk) harp and a kinnor (lyre). The uniqueness of Greg's stylized playing has made him a popular choice for international workshops. He works closely with Lyon and Healy in this regard and has enjoyed being the international spokesman for the company. Greg finds great fulfillment in being able to share not only his musical knowledge but also his personal walk of faith, thus offering great creative inspiration to those with whom he works. Greg's contemporaries in the music world admire his talents, but the compliments seem incomplete when his dedication to the ministry is not acknowledged. In today's concert marketplace, the common location is that of a hall, theater, or arena. Greg's heart continues to lead him to the churches. God has called Greg to a life of traveling to spread the Good News. Truly a traveling troubadour for the Lord. Churches in large cities and small towns have invited Greg to their locales and each time God's spirit moves. The people endear themselves to Greg, and he to them. The circle of Christian friendship and faith continues to strengthen God's people. |
