Daily Devotional:

Reading for the Day:  Ephesians 4:17-32 (part II)

Change can often be a good thing.  We don’t always want to admit it, but change is a natural part of life.  In fact, if you aren’t going through change on a regular basis, I would say you aren’t truly experiencing life.

Yesterday, we read about the sad state of people who do not know Jesus Christ.  At one level or another, we have all been there.  But the beautiful thing about Jesus is:  He changes us!  Notice verse 20.  If we have learned the truth about Jesus, we’ve learned the truth about a different kind of life—the best life!  “If indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him”, you know this good news!

Check out verses 22 through 24.  We who know Jesus have cast aside that “former manner of life”.  That’s the good news of the gospel.  The “old self”—that person empty of all hope and meaning—gets put on the shelf.  But beware.  That “old self” is a corruptive force.  When we accept Jesus and the life He offers, we must be careful not to go back to that old way of life.  Your life before Christ left deep wounds.  Don’t run back to those wounds.  Run to Jesus for healing!

In Jesus, we may “be renewed in the spirit of (our) mind”.  We have a new way of thinking!  We aren’t looking for acceptance, understanding, feeling, or some kind of “high”.  Those ways of thinking are focused on ourselves.  We have a new focus now!

We get to “put on the new self”.  That’s right, we have a new self!  This new life has been created “in the likeness of God”.  Yes, our new life identifies with Jesus Christ.  He is holy and righteous.  He has a purpose—serving His Father.  He has a passion and a joy about His life.  He does not live in the dark, but in the light of His Father’s love.  That’s the new life we have.  And Paul tells us that we are to “put (it) on”.  Cover yourself with this new life.  People don’t see your skin (at least, I hope).  They see what you put on—your clothes.  Let people see the new life you have put on!

As you prepare for your day ahead, ask yourself:  “What am I going to ‘put on’ today?”
